Event Description
Putting pen to paper is a critical part of the creative process for documentary films. In this workshop, we will review best practices and strategies for gathering your material, organizing your thoughts, and building stories for non-fiction films. We will discuss working with transcripts, the outlining process, drafts and revising. We will spend some time on treatment writing, but most of the time will be spent on building actual scenes.

Especially when working with tight budgets, scripting on paper saves an enormous amount time and money throughout a production. We will also review how to take control of your footage rather than letting your footage overwhelm you.

Students are invited (but not required) to submitup to two pages (or two minutes) of a work sample in advance -- either a written treatment or a scene in progress (video or written). These samples can be submitted through Docs in Progress via email at Please note that submitted samples MAY be workshopped in the class, but not guaranteed. The instructor will provide individual feedback on each sample.
