Event Description

A budget is an important planning tool for documentary films. It is also a necessity if you are planning to fundraise for your film. Far from numbers alone, the budget is another way of telling the story of your film.  In this session with Docs In Progress Executive Director Erica Ginsberg, we will go over the elements which make up a documentary budget, different approaches to budgeting, and how to keep your budget realistic but flexible so that it can adapt to the realities of filmmaking.  You will also receive a template for creating your own documentary budget.

This workshop is open to all who want to learn more about the basics of documentary budgeting, but is especially recommended for those applying for our February 1 fiscal sponsorship application deadline.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
‚ÄčErica Ginsberg is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Docs In Progress, a nonprofit incubator for emerging documentary filmmakers headquarted near Washington DC. She has more than 20 years of experience in program administration in the nonprofit and government sectors, working in the areas of arts and culture, nonprofit management, and international professional exchanges. She regularly reviews proposals and budgets for the Docs In Progress Fiscal Sponsorship program, and has also been a grant panelist for the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the Maryland State Arts Council, and the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. She has been a presenter on funding for the arts at the Foundation Center, and has made presentations on fiscal sponsorship or funding at DC Shorts, Women in Film and Video, and the annual conference of The Alliance (formerly the National Alliance of Media Arts and Culture). In addition to her work with Docs In Progress, she is a host of The D-Word, an online documentary filmmaker community with more than 15,000 members from around the world.

PAYMENT
Full payment must be received in order to hold a spot in this workshop. REFUND POLICY
If your circumstances change and you must withdraw from a class after registering, please be aware of our refund policy:
Withdrawal 30 or more calendar days before the first day of a program: 75% refund
Withdrawal 11-29 calendar days before the first day of a program: 50% refund
Withdrawal 10 or fewer calendar days before a program: No refund

WEATHER POLICY
In the event of inclement weather, we will make a decision by 3 pm on whether to cancel that evening’s programs. (For weekend classes, we will make the decision by 6 pm on Friday). If you have not received a notification from your instructor, call our office at 301-789-2797 (we will have an outgoing message on voicemail).
