Event Description

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Analyzing the structure of completed documentary films that are compelling is essential while developing the skill of understanding storytelling and structure in filmmaking. In this session we will analyze the structure of three documentaries (each available on Netflix or for viewing at Docs In Progress) that are very different in style and that have managed to tell outstanding stories by applying effective structure tools. This will take you from understanding storytelling techniques on a theoretical basis (covered in Session 2 on The Big Picture) to delving into completed films that have handled structure successfully. The analysis of case studies is one more way to help you to apply storytelling and structure strategies while developing your own documentary.

In order to get the most from this workshop, you will need to screen the three films we will be using as case studies BEFORE the class session (we will not be screening full films at the class).

•My Architect: a Son’s Journey by Nathaniel Kahn
•War Dance by Sean Fine and Andrea Nix Fine
•Romantic Warriors III by Adele Schmidt & Jose Zegarra Holder (after registration you will receive a complimentary copy from Adele Schmidt)

Docs In Progress also has these three films in our library available for viewing onsite only. If you would like to schedule an appointment to watch any of them here at Docs In Progress before the class, please make an appointment directly with Docs In Progress by calling (301) 789-2797 or emailing contactATdocsinprogressDOTorg. Please note that we will only be able to make appointments for weekday viewings here at Docs In Progress.

This workshop is part of a series of three documentary structure-focused workshops which also include Documentary Structure and Storytelling: The Essentials of Documentary Storytelling (9/18) and Documentary Structure and Storytelling: The Big Picture of Documentary Structure (9/25) .  If you are working on your first documentary, it is recommended you sign up for all three sessions since they build on each other.  However, it is also possible to sign up for these sessions a la carte.

If you are familiar with downtown Silver Spring and know where the Whole Foods is, there is a parking lot behind that. Behind that parking lot is a church. Behind the church is an office building at the corner of Wayne and Cedar. That's our building. It also houses a hair salon called Turning Point which is visible from Wayne.

A map and more detailed directions are on this page: http://www.docsinprogress.org/contact
Office number if you need to reach us is still 301-789-2797.

PARKING:

If you are driving, it is possible to park in the lot at the building (enter from Cedar or Wayne) in a Visitor Spot or on the street nearby (meters are only in effect until 6 pm). Please DO NOT park in any spot marked “Reserved.” Cars that park in reserved spots are often towed.

The closest large parking facility is the Wayne Avenue Garage on Wayne Avenue next to the Silver Spring Washington Sports Club. There is usually plenty of parking there, and no fee to use it on Saturdays and Sundays.
