Event Description

Conducting an on-camera interview can be challenging. On one hand you want to make sure that the technical aspects are under control, so you’ll deliver footage that is visually and aurally attractive, and on the other hand your goal is to capture the true spirit of the person you’re interviewing by making sure that the process is not only effective but also safe and respectful for the person who is being interviewed.

In this one-day documentary interviewing skills bootcamp, you will learn how to create a comfortable environment for an interview. You’ll learn about the technical aspects when setting up an interview (camera/sound/visualization, dos and don’ts while interviewing) and strategies for managing the emotional/psychological tenor of the interview in specific situations (for example: interviewee is reveling a story for the first time, has been traumatized or breaks down during the interview).

The workshop will also have a hands-on section in which we’ll do a camera/sound/lighting set up for a formal interview.

Class time will include a break for lunch.

$135 Early Bird Registration Fee (Register/pay through 10/12)
$150 Regular Registration Fee (Register/pay between 10/13 - 10/23)
$165 Late Registration Fee (Register/pay 10/24 until filled)

If you are a member of the Docs Insiders program at the Premium level, you can get a $25 discount on the registration fees for this workshop if you register by the Regular deadlines. If you are an All-Access Passholder, registration is required but is at no additional cost to you. To get the discount, you will enter a Promo Code when you get to the payment. If you missed our e-mail with the promo code, please reach us at contact AT docsinprogress DOT org to get it.

Full payment must be received to guarantee you a spot in the class.
If you are paying by credit card, select the "Paypal" option (you can pay by credit card even if you don't have a Paypal account). Payment must be made at the same time you complete the online registration form.
If you are paying by check, you still need to register online, but select "Pay by Check or Wire".  Make check payable to “Docs In Progress” and mail to:

If you are familiar with downtown Silver Spring and know where the Whole Foods is, there is a parking lot behind that. Behind that parking lot is a church. Behind the church is an office building at the corner of Wayne and Cedar. That's our building. It also houses a hair salon called Turning Point which is visible from Wayne.
A map and more detailed directions are on this page:
Office number if you need to reach us is still 301-789-2797.
If you are driving, it is possible to park in the lot at the building (enter from Cedar or Wayne) in a Visitor Spot or on the street nearby (meters are only in effect until 6 pm). Please DO NOT park in any spot marked “Reserved.” Cars that park in reserved spots are often towed.
The closest large parking facility is the Wayne Avenue Garage on Wayne Avenue next to the Silver Spring Washington Sports Club. There is usually plenty of parking there, and no fee to use it on Saturdays and Sundays.
If your circumstances change and you must withdraw from a class after registering, please be aware of our refund policy:
Withdrawal 30 or more calendar days before the first day of a program: 75% refund
Withdrawal 11-29 calendar days before the first day of a program: 50% refund
Withdrawal 10 or fewer calendar days before a program: No refund

In the event of seriously inclement weather, we will make a decision by 3 pm on whether to cancel that evening’s programs. (For Saturday classes, we will make the decision by 6 pm on Friday). If you have not received a notification from your instructor or the Educational Programs Manager, call our office at 301-789-2797 (we will have an outgoing message on voicemail).
